On a Conjecture Concerning a Theorem of Cramér and Wold
نویسنده
چکیده
Both theorems, (I) and the stronger (II), although they are very simple in their statements, have been conjectured to require Fourier analysis for their proofs; see, e.g., p. 396 of Billingsley [2] for the first and p. 49 of Billingsley [1] for the second part. This note gives probabilistic proofs of the two theorems and thus answers this conjecture to the negative. The main argument of the proof is a simple probabilistic idea that goes back to the early stages of probability theory. Also, a geometric idea that belongs to the standard repertoire in Article No. MV971705

A Sharp Form of the Cramér–wold Theorem
The Cramér–Wold theorem states that a Borel probability measure P on R is uniquely determined by its one-dimensional projections. We prove a sharp form of this result, addressing the problem of how large a subset of these projections is really needed to determine P . We also consider extensions of our results to measures on a separable Hilbert space. As an application of these ideas, we derive ...
متن کاملSupport theorems for the Radon transform and Cramér-Wold theorems
This article presents extensions of the Cramér-Wold theorem to measures that may have infinite mass near the origin. Corresponding results for sequences of measures are presented together with examples showing that the assumptions imposed are sharp. The extensions build on a number of results and methods concerned with injectivity properties of the Radon transform. Using a few tools from distri...

متن کاملA New Theorem Concerning Scattering of Electromagnetic Waves in Multilayered Metamaterial Spherical Structures
The proposed theorem in this paper is indicative of a kind of duality in the propagation of waves in the dual media of and in the spherical structures. Independent of wave frequency, the number of layers, their thickness, and the type of polarization, this theorem holds true in case of any change in any of these conditions. Theorem: Consider a plane wave incident on a multilayered spheric...
متن کاملOn two problems concerning the Zariski topology of modules
Let $R$ be an associative ring and let $M$ be a left $R$-module.Let $Spec_{R}(M)$ be the collection of all prime submodules of $M$ (equipped with classical Zariski topology). There is a conjecture which says that every irreducible closed subset of $Spec_{R}(M)$ has a generic point. In this article we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture and show that if $M$ has a Noetherian spectrum, t...
